Ian Woolston-Smith has years of experience working on features, television, national commercials, music videos, and documentaries. Ian pursued his interest in Cinema with a Bachelor Of Fine Arts Degree, as well as studying at the Maine Film And Television Media Workshops with Academy Award winning Cinematographers like Walter Lassally, BSC. Ian's many experiences led him to study Steadicam Operating with the renowned inventor Garrett Brown, and master Steadicam operator Larry McConkey.
The rise of music video sparked collaboration with many directors and cameramen with a vast array of unusual visual styles. Ian is not distracted by different languages and has enjoyed Miami, Costa Rica, and Puerto Vallarta Mexico, for music video production. Ian's wealth of musical experience comes in handy when working music video parodies for Saturday Night Live.
Traveling for commercials is not a problem particularly if it is Winter and you are in Miami. Special technical requests like rotating the camera quickly on the roll axis can be tested in advance and controlled by my thumb or by remote. This demonstrated on the reels page of this site. Special custom technical requests in advance are an appreciated challenge to a well organized shoot. When traveling its nice to know a lot about the shoot so we don't bring every piece of gear as that can be expensive for air travel.
Features, with A or B camera operating, moving camera, and Steadicam, almost everyday is all considered a plus. Ian has repeatedly worked well with actor/directors, who are in front of the camera while directing. Its even more important in those situations to always be available to receive directions when they are ready to give it, and wait your turn appropriately to discus your concerns.
In television comedy Ian has operated notable work on Dave Chappell's Emmy nominated show, "Charlie Murphies True Hollywood Stories: Rick James". Also he has done Steadicam for SNL including, "Mother Lovers" sequel to the Emmy winning short "Dick in a Box", as well as about 19 different segments to date.
